  • What utter garbage!

    Not only is it totally unrealistic, but the use of the codeword 'Broken Arrow' is completely wrong. Broken Arrow means a nuclear weapon incident.

    There have been plenty of occasions where the defence have called in artillery and mortar strikes on their own position, but only when their troops had overhead protection - unlike here.

    The nearest related thing is danger-close as exemplified by the ANZAC use of close artillery at Long Tan.

    • @DEADBEEF Air Force: Broken Arrow = when a nuclear weapons is lost or accidently exploded.

      Army: Broken Arrow = when a unit is about to be overrun. All air assets divert to the location to assist

    • @UpYours

      You may say that but where's your reference?

      I was trained in Vietnam War codewords as part of my 80s Infantry training. I have never heard that codeword. I had plenty of other ones such as Strikewarn for imminent nuclear strike but never broken arrow.

    • @DEADBEEF This isn't modern lingo, and "Broken Arrow" has been used a few times in a few situations, this one is the battle of ia drang;
      "As the battle along the southern line intensified, Lieutenant Charlie W. Hastings (USAF liaison: forward air controller), made the decision (based on criteria established by the USAF) to transmit the code phrase "Broken Arrow", which relayed that an American combat unit was in danger of being overrun. In so doing, Hastings was calling More..

  • Damn good movie. I'm not sure about a battalion commander wearing his rank on his uniform in Vietnam though. Hell, they even had orders to not salute anyone in the field...unless you didn't like the officer and wanted him sniped.

    On a side note, I think that DEADBEEF needs to read up on some actual military actions before he blurts out some Hollywood script lines.
