The difference is that some of those "unarmed" protesters in Syria aren't that innocent and are very well armed or at least some bad apples within them are. I'm not gonna make excuses for the Assad regime since it is a dictatorship, but until you live in a place like that (middle-east in general) and are being shot at, you can't really make a judgement.
