  • It's so simple to stop on that size airfield, manual says the following.
    1 stomp on brakes
2 reef the handbrake to the 'far up position'
    3 open all windows
4 engage 'fuck me' reverse thrusters
    5 cup hands outside windows
    6 downshift to 1st
7 after completing stop high five copilot with fuck yeah
8 exit aircraft at small airfield and display your huge brass balls to jaw dropped locals

  • "How in the hell did he stop on that?"

    It's a C-17, that's how.

"The C-17 currently holds over 20 world-class airlift records, including payload to altitude time-to-climb, and the Short TakeOff and Landing (STOL) mark in which the C-17 took off in less than 1,400 feet (427m), carried a payload of 44,000 pounds (19,958kg) to altitude, and landed in less than 1,400 feet (427m)." http://www.theaviationzone.com/factsheets/c17.asp

This runway is over 3500 feet long.

  • The C-17 can land and take off on very short runways (been there, done that). I doubt the pilot,co-pilot, onboard computer and their command base all made the mistake for him to land there.

Just 4 miles further to the AF base, either a very bad mistake or a very immediate emergency. Let's wait for the official statement, that's gonna be interesting.

  • The plane bound for MacDill Air Force Base on the southern tip of Tampa accidently landed at the tiny Peter O. Knight Airport in the middle of homes on Davis Islands.

Peter O. Knight is approximately four miles north of MacDill but significantly smaller in size.

Witnesses and nearby homeowners near the airport, when the plane landed, say they could hardly believe their eyes and feared the aircraft may crash through the end of the small runway and end up in Tampa Bay.

    • @mrbottle Oh shit. Someone fucked up big time. While it is true the pilot had some skills when he landed it on that short runway. It is still more than likely cause the loss of his flight status. Grounded pilots are such sad people.....

    • @mrbottle

If the runways have the same number, maybe they need to paint some kind of additional tag on one of them to make it easier for pilots to tell them apart.

  • Chill the fuck out everyone. C-17's are equipped with reverse thrusters which make short landings like this one possible. Also, landing against high winds, an airplane can land much shorter than on a calm day. Listen to the wind in the cell mic.

  • This plane is designed to land
and take off from short landing strips...

  • Big dark plane on a runway intended for small white planes. That runway will never be the same. Well, as they say, once you go C-17, you never go back to Cessna.

  • These planes were specifically designed and built for SHORT takeoff and landing in war zones.

The C-17 can even land on dirt runways.

There was never any safety problem. It's just the media trying to make something out of nothing.

But the pilot landing at the wrong airport is a mistake which I think will effect his career.
