Salvation Army hostel turned away 17-year-old rape victim because 'we only help men here'

KATHARINE BARNEY

A good Samaritan who came to the aid
of a naked and battered rape victim has told how they were turned away
from the Salvation Army because 'they only help men'.Elliott Mannix, 18, managed to scare off rapist Mawawe Ibraham Karam as he lurked near his terrified and screaming victim.

Several
other passers-by had ignored the 17-year-old A-Level student’s pleas
for help but hero Mr Mannix came to her rescue as she stood nude and
bleeding in the street.

'Appalling': Mawawe Ibraham Karam (left) was
jailed for ten years for the attack while Elliot Mannix (right) helped
the victim afterwards

But incredibly, when he took the
Oxford University hopeful to the Salvation Army hostel to call for help,
in Sneinton, Nottingham, their desperate pleas were ignored.Mr Mannix said: 'I desperately rang the buzzer at the hostel but the guy on the intercom just said we only help men here.

'We were still passing people and I said, ‘Please help me, this girl has just been raped’, but they all ignored us.

'Taxi drivers just pretended they didn’t hear me right.'

Karam
raped and attacked his victim for 90 minutes after she had enjoyed a
night out in Nottingham city centre, on March 25 this year.

Mr Mannix was the first to
answer her cries for help, forcing Karam to flee the scene. Weeks later
he also helped police identify him as the attacker.Having originally pleaded not guilty, in court Karam exposed himself to the judge, screaming, “I’m guilty, I’m guilty”.

Mr Mannix, from Sneinton, Nottingham, was returning home from a night out when he came across the hysterical victim.

He described his shock when he saw no one else in the street ahead of him was coming to her aid.

He
said: 'I could just hear her screaming. She was in the middle of the
road and I watched a group of five people pass by and not even
acknowledge her.

Turned away: The Salvation Army said they would not help rape victim because 'they only help men'

'She screamed again and I thought she
was a mental patient. Then I got closer and saw she was naked and then I
saw him - Karam - behind her.'I
just ran over and gave her my jacket, he saw me and he fled. Instinct
just took over, I didn’t know what to do at first so I just started
looking for more help.'She had nothing on, she was so cold and she was bleeding and her lips were purple because it was so freezing.

'She just clung onto me and kept saying, "Please, don’t leave me, please don’t leave me. I want to go home, I want my Mum."

'It was so upsetting. I couldn’t believe no one had helped her.'

Illegal immigrant Karam, 28, from
Sudan, was jailed for 10 years at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday for
the attack after dragging his defenceless victim into an alleyway.Police
discovered semen on the victim and linked Karam with CCTV images from
the Sneinton market area of the city and the description given by
Elliott.

Verdict: Judge Michael Stokes QC said the circumstances were 'Absolutely appalling'

The court heard how Karam had attacked the victim after she had been left alone whilst walking home.

Pleading
guilty to rape, Karam also admitted stealing her phone, leaving her
naked with no way of getting help after she had escaped his evil
clutches.After ensuring
Karam was not waiting to attack again, Mr Mannix took her to the nearby
male Salvation Army hostel but shockingly an official refused to ring
the police for help. For 20 minutes he tried in vain to ask people and passing taxi drivers for assistance but no one would help her.

He said: 'All the time I was just so frustrated I couldn’t ring her mum like she wanted me to but of course her phone had gone.

'Luckily
I found a big residential set of flats in Lower Parliament Street that
had a 24 hour reception and I desperately asked the guy to help us and
ring the Police.'They arrived five minutes later and made sure she got to hospital.

'It
was such a relief when we were able to find help. I just remember
trying to go through as much as possible with the police about what I
could remember about him.'Judge
Michael Stokes QC said Karam, of Herbert Road, Nottingham, had raped
the teenager in 'absolutely appalling circumstances' because she was
drunk.Karam, who pleaded
guilty on Wednesday, came to the UK illegally and was given indefinite
leave to remain, but the judge said he would recommend Karam be deported
after serving his sentence.Mr Mannix was given a reward of £500 and a commendation from the court for assisting the victim.

He
said he felt upset for the girl, who he has not seen since, and said he
acted like he hoped anyone would on finding an assault victim.Mr Mannix said: 'I just feel really sorry for her. What she went through was horrific. I’m glad I could help catch the guy.

'I
feel good that I was there to help her, I would do it again but I hope I
never have to help anyone like that, in that position, again. No one
deserves to go through something like that.'I
see myself as a supportive guy who would help anyone but I hope more
people don’t just ignore someone if they sense something isn’t right.'

Ordeal: The illegal immigrant attacked the 17-year-old as she walked home from a night out in Nottingham

Dawn Pritchard, prosecuting in
the case praised Elliott for his swift actions and explained the girl’s
education had been affected by the distress of the incident. She said: 'Some people had ignored her and passed by her.

'Elliott Mannix had been out in the city centre. He was sober and walking home to Sneinton.

'It is clear the victim was doing extremely well academically and hoping to go to Oxford University.

'But as a result of this she hasn’t achieved great grades in her AS-levels, and is taking her lower sixth year again.'

Detective
Chief Inspector Louise Jordan of Nottinghamshire Police who led the
investigation, said: 'Karam targeted his victim after finding her alone
in the street.'He took advantage of her vulnerability, dragged her into an alleyway out of view, and subjected her to a horrific assault.

'He then left her lying in the street, semi-naked, taking with him her mobile phone her only means of contact.

'She
has little recollection of the ordeal but found the bravery to face her
attacker in court today where justice was done and Karam was handed a
lengthy sentence.''I hope
that his sentencing will signal an end to this difficult and painful
chapter of the victim’s life and she can in some way begin to look
forward to her future.'
