Born Randy Wolfe, he had a remarkable life, mentored by none other than Jimi Hendrix (who gave him the name Randy California), who he met at the age of 14 and toured with him in the US AT 15, before Jimi went to the UK and formed “The Jimi Hendrix Experience” (his parents wouldn't allow him to go to the UK as he was too young). He drowned tragically off the coast of the island of Molokai, Hawaii, after pushing his 12 year old son to safety before the undertow took him in January 1997.

And yes, Will Ferrell allegedly modeled his Blue Oyster Cult bit after Randy.
