The Crystal Beach Cyclone - History's Scariest Roller Coaster
.
The Crystal Beach Cyclone is a highly extreme and vicious roller coaster designed and built by Harry G. Traver in the late 1920s. The Cyclone was located at the Crystal Beach Amusement Park in Ontario, Canada.

The layout consisted of a twisted arrangement of track with many curved, and steeply angled drops, banking at up to 80 degrees, the trains traversed multiple banked spirals and figure-8 sections. Other than one trim brake, there were no brake runs outside of the station as there were no level portions of track where brakes could be located (The trim brake was between the spiral's exit and the figure 8 element).
Over 5 million rides were given in its 20-year history with only one fatality.
This occurred on opening day May 30, 1938 when a 22-year old man was thrown from the train after the first drop. A failed lap bar was deemed to be the cause and the rider's estate was awarded $3000 by the court.
One death occurred on the Cyclone, on the first day of the 1938 season. A man named Amos Wiedrich apparently stood up to take his coat off, falling to his death after the first drop and being hit seconds later by the train he had been riding in.

The Crystal Beach ride also kept a nurse in the station who was there to assist anyone who fainted, although she was originally hired to help lower insurance costs. Later, it is rumored that she was kept on the payroll to help keep the Cyclone known as one of the fiercest coasters around. Popular coaster lore says that she kept smelling salts on her and that a hot dog stand adjacent to the coaster.

Incredible coaster for that day & age. Thanks for posting. I used to go to Crystal beach practically every week in the summer. Grew up riding the comet. Shame they shut the park down.

@Ruffus - Did that become Canada's Wonderland or is that something completely different?
we did a US park tour in 2002. 27 parks/125 coasters ridden in 3 months.

@Ruffus me too! we had a cottage @ Crescent Beach. Many fond memories of the park. The comet was reassembled at the Great Escape in Queensbury NY, not the same experience I bet. Someone is still making those giant suckers around here, I buy them at farmers markets.

@bellava - shit! The Comet at Great Escape is always ranked high every year by coaster enthusiasts and is supposed to be an awesome ride. I never knew where it had originated.

@stirgy it was set up right next to the lake, so when you got up to the first drop, all you could see was miles of blue water. spectacular:)

I had to pause half a second into it and come here to say...Alice in Chains was amazing. Layne Staley had the best voice of any of the grungers. Now on to the video!

@stirgy Yeah I don't know how I forgot about Cornell. He has some fantastic pipes. Something about Layne Staley's voice though...so hauntingly morose.
