A dramatic attempt by an Alvin woman to catch a trio of suspected beer thieves ended at a west side Wal-Mart Sunday afternoon.
According to police, Monique Lawless witnessed the suspects walking out of an Alvin Wal-Mart with three cases of beer without paying. Enraged by their brazen attitude she left the checkout line and chased the men to their getaway car parked in the fire lane.
As the suspects got into their Camaro, Lawless quickly climbed to the top of the car and began stomping on the moon roof, all the while yelling for help. Lawless reportedly told police she expected others to help stop the thieves, but no one did.
The suspects then allegedly drove away; laughing as Lawless slid from the car and was thrown to the ground. Although officials say she sustained cuts and bruises from the fall, she was not seriously injured.
“I can understand she wanted to stop the criminals, but I am concerned she could have put herself in serious danger,” Alvin Police Chief Mike Merkel said when contacted by the Journal. “She could have been attacked or shot. We’ve seen these types of incidents end in violence.”
Witnesses outside the store told police they thought Lawless was being carjacked and called 911. Alvin Police Officers quickly responded and a high speed car chase ensued.
Chief Merkel said the men also put others in harm’s way as they led police down the highway and through Pearland neighborhoods and streets.
“Had someone’s family been at the wrong place at the wrong time the suspects could have caused a tragic car accident,” he said.
Ironically, the suspects ended up where they started, at Wal-Mart, just at a different store location.
Pearland Police arrested Sylvester Primitivo Thompson, 19; and Durlentren Sylvester Thompson, 21, on charges of Evading Arrest and Aggravated Robbery.
The third suspect, Sylverster Andre Thompson, 21, was arrested and charged with Evading Arrest, Aggravated Robbery as well as Parole Violations.
