Until now it is unclear what caused Hamas to take control of Gaza. The American magazine Vanity Fair published a report on Tuesday claiming that US President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice were involved in covert plans to topple and destroy Hamas after it was elected in 2006. The magazine said it had received confidential information that were corroberated by US and Palestinian sources that approved by Bush and implemented by Rice. The documents reveal Bush attempts to arm the Palestinian Fatah affiliated faction appointing Mohammed Dahlan, President Abbas security adviser, as its leader. The magazine said Dahlan met with Bush three times after the 2006 Palestinian elections. The report claims that when Rice was asked to comment on the issue, she responded that Iran is arming Hamas and there is no reason why the US should not go along with its plans to strengthen Fatah and supply it with the necessary muscle to oust Hamas. The United States transferred vast amounts of money and weapons to Fatah's Dahlan via the Rafah crossing in southern Gaza and also through outside elements. Hamas became aware of the plans and decided to execute its bloody takeover in Gaza. The American plan clearly backfired, further proof of Bush's failed foreign policy which in the end led to Hamas becoming far more extremist and contradicts Bush's vision of democracy in the Middle East.05/03/08
