JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Doctors at Shands Jacksonville are busy treating the victims of the Berkman parking garage collapse.
13 people, 12 men and 1 woman, went to Shands with non-life threatening injuries.
People are being treated for fractures and concussions. The most serious are spinal injuries.
Nine victims have been released as of Thursday afternoon.
Trauma doctor Joan Huffman told First Coast News the hospital had forty doctors working on the floor during the initial rush of patients.
"The patients were somewhat in shock," said Dr. Huffman. "They were somewhat stressed, covered with dirt and concrete. They were frightened."
The hospital had chaplains on standby to comfort families.
The hospital activated its incident command center, which allowed the staff who just ended their shift to remain and help.
The move gave the hospital a bigger pool of doctors to assist in this emergency.
"We could have handled fifty patients easily without a problem," said Dr. David Caro.
The center has been deactivated and the number of doctors on hand has been reduced.
