In yet another slap in the face for British workers and the British economy, it has been revealed that the Foreign Office is actively helping Korean companies bid for London Olympic 2012 contracts.
The shocking admission slipped out on a blog post by Britain’s ambassador to South Korea Martin Uden, who revealed that companies abroad are being encouraged to bid for work for the 2012 Games.
In a staggering display of arrogance and conceit, Mr Uden expressed “surprise” that bringing in foreign firms could cause concern
“It is estimated that there are still some 70,000 contracts to be awarded valued at around £8bn (US$11.5bn or over KRW 17 trillion),” Mr Uden wrote.
“The opportunities will arise across a range of sectors, from transport, merchandising and ICT, to logistics, security and construction. I’ve found some surprise that we are encouraging foreign bids for this work, but clearly this is the best way to ensure we get the best value for money and the best Games in the end. I’d certainly be delighted to see as many Korean companies as possible competing for and winning these contracts,” he said.
Mr Uden goes on to reveal that a website — http://www.competefor.com — has been established to publicise Games-related contract opportunities to overseas companies.
To add insult to injury, that website announces that it was “developed on behalf of the English Regional Development Agencies and UK Devolved Administrations by the London Development Agency, working closely with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)” — in other words, you, the taxpayer.
This is the bizarre level to which this country has dropped: where British taxpayers finance the outsourcing of British jobs to foreign companies.
Mr Uden says that if any Korean company has “problems or questions, the Inward Investment Team in the Embassy stands ready to help as well. Tom Matlock (a foreign office official at the embassy in Seoul) can help with this or any other assistance for companies that wish to expand their business into the UK.”
Latest government figures have shown that more than 10,000 foreign citizens have been given National Insurance numbers to work in London’s Olympic borough.
British jobs for British workers? Not likely under the Labour/Conservative.
