Treating a Smashed Finger Redneck Style with a MIG Welder 
Redneck way of relieving pressure in a smashed finger by relieving the built up bIood under the fingernail by making a hole in the nail (also known as trephining) with a red hot wire from a MIG welder . I guess that is one way to do it (saves money). I'll keep this in mind if I ever smash my finger while at tech school.

Or you could go to the hospital. That's what we do in the UK. Seem to see a lot of DIY medical things done in the USA due to the shit healthcare system.

I had this done at the hospital back in the eighties with a red hot paper clip.. the first attempt just made a crater in the nail.. ouch.. and the second attempt the nurse was pressing so hard when the clip went through the nail it almost came out the other side of my finger... Ouch... but the pressure relief was amazing... the blood squirted about 2 feet into the air !

@bandit1200 I had it done too around 4 years ago when I was at summer camp (smashed my finger in a car door the week before. The doctors used a drill to make a hole. I remember when a camp counciler was changing the dressing, blood sprayed in her face.
