Child found OK in apartment with dead parents

GRANITE CITY • Authorities said Monday that a 5-month-old girl was sleeping peacefully when her parents were found dead in their Granite City apartment over the weekend.
The bodies of Joshua M. Morgan, 21, and Amber L. Morgan, 18, were discovered in their home in the 2400 block of Madison Avenue about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. They apparently died sometime late Friday or early Saturday morning, said Roger Smith, chief investigator for the Madison County Coroner's Office.
Major Jeff Connor of the Granite City police said the couple lived in an apartment in the home of Amber Morgan's mother, who discovered the bodies.
Connor said the baby was examined at a hospital emergency room and found to be "perfectly fine." He said the girl's grandmother is caring for her.
Trevor Tredway, an emergency room physician at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, said babies generally need to feed every three or four hours but a healthy baby with a full stomach and in a comfortable environment might sleep six to eight hours without fussing, and endure longer than that without serious health issues.
Police believe the Morgans' deaths were probably the result of drug overdoses. Autopsies were inconclusive but revealed no trauma to the bodies. Authorities are awaiting results of toxicology tests to determine the presence of drugs.
There's no reason to believe there was anything criminal in this case," Connor said.
