Doctor says near-death experiences are in the mind

NEWTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- For Laura Geraghty, April 1, 2009, started out just as any other day. It was sunny but cool, she remembers.

The mother of two, also a grandmother, was at her job, driving a school bus for the Newton Public School District in suburban Boston, Massachusetts.

Her passengers, special-needs children, were wheelchair-bound.

Seemingly in good health and in good spirits, Geraghty was finishing up her late-morning run, transporting a student and teacher back to Newton South High School, when she realized she was in trouble.

As she was pulling into the school parking lot, she began having sharp stomach pains. She was able to park her bus, but she kept feeling worse.

The pain "went right up my arm and into my chest, and I said, 'Uh-oh, I'm having a heart attack,' " she said.

The teacher ran from the bus to get help. Newton South's nurse, Gail Kramer,

  • My experience

I was walking down the street when everything seemed to start moving. Sounds all merged into one nad every time I moved toward soemthing it moved away from me. I had no sensation of pain despite striking many objects. Everybody was my best friend. The last thing I remember was lying back with a sensation of the world tilting trying to throw me off. Then I awoke with a blinding headache and an aversion to bright light.

    Curse you Jose Cuervo.

  • Actually this sounds exactly like the video of the brain surgeon who had a stroke herself. She described feeling greatly at peace with herself and with the world -- having a universal "connectedness" with everything, and losing touch with her body. The left part of her brain that organizes and strategizes was being starved and she was left only with her right brain which "experiences".

The near death experience is evidently just your brain dying.

On the bright side, i More..

  • Anyone, no matter who educated that pretends to know or understand what happens this deep inside of someones mind and concious is a complete fool and extremely arrogant. No doctor or scientist can possibly know or underdtand this and no, it cannot be explained.

  • I'm not disagreeing, I "believe" he is right, but he didn't really create a convincing argument for himself using the "because I'm a doctor and I said." I know he also said he studied a lot of people because he's so fascinated by it. Really, well I studied like.... a bazillion trillion and I am a MDMDMMMD DDO CISSP Esq Jr IV! (oh, and I start my name with "Sir" too) What do you think about that Mr Doctor man?

  • Near death experiences are obviously in the mind... the hardware (brain) loses power leaving sensory perception disconnected... our awareness attentuates... and the rest is left to our imagination and cultural interpretations...

  • Perhaps they should talk to soldiers who nearly died and see what they have to say. Afterall, there surely must be a lot of them that happen to them. Just on segment on CNN doesn't make it so. There are many books talking about this subject and a lot of them believe what is happening to them.

  • Dr. Kevin Nelson's theory of NDEs being REM intrusion has already been falsified by the REAL experts of NDEs such as those from IANDS.org and NDERF.org. NDEs have shown to occur when REM sleep is impossible. The problem with Nelson's dream theory (and the hallucination theory) is that during a NDE, you are unconscious. One of the things we know about brain function in unconsciousness, is that you cannot create images and if you do, you cannot remember them. The brain isn't functioning. It's not More..

what a joke. What kind of prediction is "A major terrorist attack may befall New York City or Washington, DC, severely impacting the way we live in the United States"
