MK-19 AUTOMATIC GRENADE LAUNCHER IN FIREFIGHT
From the cameraman:
4th Platoon D Co 2-5 IN 3/1 AD
Camera is on my gunner, firefight was around four hours long involving three enemy SAF sections, one RPG team (who we killed a month later), and an 82mm mortar team. The camera died about halfway through before it started getting really dicey, the Taliban only stoped engaging after we called in four A-10 gun runs on their positions in the green zones.

The Mk 19 is a belt fed, blowback operated, air cooled, crew served, fully automatic weapon that is designed not to cook off. It fires 40 mm grenades at a cyclic rate of 325 to 375 rounds per minute, giving a practical rate of fire of 60 rounds per minute (rapid) and 40 rounds per minute (sustained).
The Mk 19 is able to launch its grenade at a maximum distance of 2,212 meters, though its effective range for a point target is about 1,500 meters, since the large rear leaf sight is only graduated More..

@FahQ
That is my order of choice too. But the 240 has to be mounted, that is a pig a bitch to carry, fortunately for me, I carried the M-4, and since we were the Scout/Sniper Platoon, all our 240's were mounted. The infantry guys had to carry that bitch.

Dummy rounds? I hate to play the armchair general, but I'm guessing it's a training exercise.
I sure as shit wouldn't want to ever find myself on the wrong end of one of those bad boys.
Now make some martyr's, boys :D. And thanks for your service.
I've been accused of being a 'liberal' on liveleak (actually more centre-left) of being a 'terrorist sympathizer' (for some of my view on the Syria conflict) and a number of other things. But one thing can be said for me, I fucking support the tro More..

Firing the "ghost round" during the reload.......I love the Mk-19, 40mm's of love, fantastic area target weapon system, just a pig of a bitch to upload/download from your truck.
Anyone that has had the joy to fire this, knows what I am talking about. You can watch the rounds going down range, and make adjustments as needed, and it is fantastic for "recon by fire".

Interesting to watch how in the early videos of Afghanistan the MK-19 operators would actually use the ammo cans and would pull and drop the empty ones off the side of the Humvee. After learning the enemy would use them, sometimes for IEDs, he leaves the cans in the vehicle and replaces the 40mm grenades in the can. Though that rear sight is worthless without a spring to hold it back or a locking lever.

Yeah, the old LAW rockets in Vietnam made great motar tubes for VC/NVA.
After a while the standard IA was to fire the rocktet then jump on the tube lol.
