In the world of natural and man-made disasters, survival goes not to the fittest... but to those who are prepared.

According to Bob Nelson, Executive Director of the National Disaster Communications Response Team, only 6.4 percent of Americans are thoroughly prepared with adequate supplies of food, water and other emergency supplies (this includes knowing evacuation routes and having contingency plans in place) to ensure their own survival in the event of a major catastrophe. "If you're waiting for FEMA to come and rescue you from the throes of a disaster, then you have bigger problems than this book can fix."
