Two Austin police officers have been fired and another two have been suspended after an officer struck a woman and then, along with other officers, failed to accurately report the incident.
Assistant Chief Sean Mannix with the Austin Police Department said on the night of Aug. 31, former APD Officer Michelle Gish was assisting EMS workers to secure 23-year-old Elisa Jamies into a gurney in the 3000 block of Rexford Drive in East Austin. Jamies was reportedly intoxicated and was not cooperating with emergency officials.
aimes spit in Officer Gish’s face, prompting Gish to strike Jaimes in the head “at least one time,” according to Mannix.
Dash camera video of the incident shows other APD officers on the scene forcibly removing Gish from Jamies. The footage also shows EMS personnel wiping down Gish’s face.
Mannix says Gish provided an inaccurate account of what happened in her written police report. An on-scene supervisor, Jose Robledo, “failed to adequately investigate” Gish’s response, and was also terminated from the force, according to Mannix.
