CANADA (July 13. 2009): In what is considered a racist move, the Canadian government imposed visa restrictions on the Czech Republic because many Roma Gypsies are flooding into Canada from that country.

I feel for these people too - but just how heavy should our tax burden be? I hear they get put up in hotels with each person getting an allowance for food (not their idea but our government). Shouldn't we take care of our old people and natives first?

This is not racist. They come here and try to claim refugee status. They are not refugees. They are looking for a better life.

Since when can "economically disadvantaged" people of any nationality claim "refugee" status? I sympathize with Canada, which probably takes in more immigrants than any other, on this particular issue.

Indeed. In 2006, there were only 2 refugee claims from the Czech Republic. After the Visa requirements were removed in 2007, there have been 3000 claims from the country. The Czechs are probably annoyed because they can't pass the problem of the Romas to another country.

The problem is many of them refuse to wash, they hassle people for money as a first option rather than working. They beat and rob people (even with their kids present). They are a nuisance, and refuse to integrate into society, that is why they are discriminated against socially.

Come to wales and see the massive population of Gypsies they the men drive around in nice cars and send their wives out to beg sell big issues and have as many kid as possible a massive burdon on the state they dont speak a word of english or welsh so we spend loads on interpters,well done Canada more for us.

The Roma are a race of thieving, lying, scumbags that in their culture being a good thief is an HONOUR.
They are a nightmare when they get to your community, they steal,pickpocket and burglarise everything they can. We had them in Belfast for a year or two until people had had enough and basically they were threatened to leave or else....they left :)
Their own ambassador from Romania refused to have them back and the local taxpayers ended up having to fund their "repatriation".

They come from Romania, where they were originally slaves brought from Egypt (hence "Gypsies) by the Romans. Prior to being enslaved in Egypt, they were migratory workers from India.

Traditionally, a gypsy is not supposed to live in one place, so they move around a lot. In Russia, I've seen them all over the place - from Vladivostok to St.Petersburg.

We now require visas for Mexicans as well now. This was passed at the same time as far as I know.

After the fall of the iron curtain around 1990, Germany experienced a high influx of Roma "refugees". In those days Germany would allow anybody to stay temporarily if they claimed asylum. It would then take about 12-18 months for the immigration authorities to prove that 99% of the applicants would have no case for asylum and were sent back to mainly Romania.
