They didn't have to shoot the gunman. That guy at :25 has the assault shield. I know from Black Ops2 that all you need to do is back the gunman into a corner and shove him twice with the assault shield to kill him.

That was a detonator. It's wind up to build a charge in a capacitor. Eliminates the need for batteries or an external power source. Basically it always works. Same principle as a wind-up radio or a shake-flashlight.
