WASHINGTON (December 29, 2011)—Three Fort Hood soldiers died on Tuesday in Paktia, Afghanistan of wounds received in homemade bomb attack on their unit, the military said Thursday.
Sgt. Noah M. Korte, 29, of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; Spc. Kurt W. Kern, 24, of McAllen, Texas, and Pfc. Justin M. Whitmire, 20, of Easley, S.C., were assigned to Fort Hood’s 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade.
Korte joined the Army in May 2003 and had been assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade since September 2011.
He deployed to Afghanistan earlier this month.
He also deployed to Iraq from January 2004 to April 2004, March 2005 to February 2006 and September 2007 to December 2008.
His awards and decorations include four Army Commendation Medals, two Good Conduct Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medals with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral two, Army Service Ribbon, three Overseas Service Ribbons, Driver and Mechanic Badge with operator and Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-Wheeled Vehicles.
Kern joined the Army in September 2009 and had been assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade since September.
He deployed to Afghanistan earlier this month.
His awards and decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.
Whitmire joined the Army in September 2010 and had been assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade since September.
He deployed to Afghanistan in July.
His awards and decorations included the National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
