CAMDEN COUNTY - School is out for the the summer, but the impact of a Georgia Supreme court decision will be felt on school campuses.

A decision last month opened the possibility that a teacher can have a consensual sexual relationship with students as young as 16.

Jose Rodriguez is a teacher at Camden County High School, and he says the county follows it's own strict standards and there are still punishments from the state office of professional standards.

"It's a taboo, it's a no, no, you lose your position right away, just on the basis that. The student teacher relationship has to be maintained, at all times, at all costs," says Rodriguez.

But at the moment, any legal charges would be difficult to enforce. Some state legislators like Jerry Keen (Email), from St. Simons, are already talking about closing what they are calling a 'loophole' in the law.

"I think it's pretty obvious and anyone would agree that a school teacher that has a student in their school should not be having a sexual relationship with a student," says Keen.

And already, cases are being dismissed because of the ruling.

Wednesday, a district attorney in Baldwin County dropped a case against a teacher charged with sexual assault. He said after the Supreme Court ruling it could not be prosecuted.

Keen says work is already beginning on changing the law.

"It's disappointing the court made this ruling. But come January, I've spoken to the chairman of our judiciary committee and he has the draft done and we'll enter it and move fairly quickly to correct that."

CAMDEN COUNTY - Charges have been dropped against a Georgia teacher who was accused of having sex with two of her students.
