Met Office: No global warming in last 16 years

In a report quietly released on the internet without any press releases to draw attention, the Met has found that global temperatures measured land and sea across 3000 stations have remained flat for the last 16 years from 1997 to 2012.

This 16-year period equals the 16-year period from 1980 to 1996 when global temperatures had risen. The 40 years before 1980 had stable or declining temperatures, which caused climate scientists in the 1970s to predict that global cooling was leading into a disastrous new ice age. During the 1980s, as temperatures rebounded, these same scientists reversed their opinions and declared that global warming is the threat.

The Met report has sparked robust debate among climate scientists. Among them is Phil Jones, the head of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, who was at the center of the Climategate e-mail scandal in 2009. Jones famously commented in one of his e-mails about using a trick to "hide the decline" in recent temperature measurements. Apparently, even that "trick" is no longer enough to force temperature measurements to conform to the so-called "hockey stick" model used to predict global warming. Jones responded to the Met Office's recent numbers by declaring that 15 or 16 years is too short a period from which to draw conclusions.

It is unclear if Jones realized the irony of his statement given that the previous warming period before the current plateau in temperatures also lasted 16 years, and it was on the basis of these 16 years that scientists like Jones declared firm belief in global warming.

Jones also stated in 2009 in one of the e-mails released in the Climategate scandal, "Bottom line: the 'no upward trend' has to continue for a total of 15 years before we get worried." Jones has not commented on whether or not he still believes this statement to be true. Presumably, given his dogged insistence that global warming will happen, he has changed his mind. No word on what the new threshold for stable or cooling temperatures has to be before Jones will question or abandon his theories.

  • I would really like to see the graph go back 250 years or so. We already know the temperatures on earth have never been "stable" and are ever changing.

Ups and downs in the temperatures are the norm. While we can use science to gather information and try to use that information explain what is going on around us. It is often subject to interpretation to try and make sense of it.

  • I can only assume that Americans being so used to using fossil fuels to such a huge factor more than any other country is why they always seem to argue that any kind of link between burning them and an effect on the planet is nonsense.

The thing is if it was just Americans driving around while everyone else just looked on it would be OK ..
But the massive acceleration across the world of demand for all things that use fossil fuels to be used is the problem.

  • Not to mention this The UK Met Office said two years ago it had underestimated recent warming. The key reason is their Hadley/CRU (Climatic Research Unit) Temperature dataset (HadCRUT) undersampled the Arctic — the place on earth warming up the fastest.
Now the Met[eorological] Office (part of the Defence Ministry) has corrected their errors and update their temperature record (release here, video below). No longer is 1998 the hottest year on record. It has been (slightly) edged out by 2010 an More..

So the fact that the Met Office's 2011 and 2012 data so far zero out the .11C warming that they'd reported two years ago has no bearing whatsoever on this discussion?

And did the Met Office go back to undersampling the Arctic? I find it hard to believe that they would "correct" for errors one year, only to let those errors creep back in the next.

I'd have thought, too, that two more years of data showing that 2010 was an anomaly and that there had been no warming More..

While the arctic ice has melted, the antarctic ice has been breaking records for a while now.

without the necessary data I would be willing to bet the antarctic ice is growing at a rate similar to the arctic ice is melting.

We too often forget that the earth's climate encompasses the ENTIRE earth and not just one part or another.

The fact the mainstream media is ignoring the rest of the story is amazing. You can find millions of pages about the arctic ice shrinking but damn near not More..

Wouldn't the expanding ice cause greater reflection of light and as a result help offset the warming?

Because it is feared with the arctic ice melting the temperature will increase further.

Also temperature changes have forever been the norm, as we have had ice ages, warmer periods and even little ice ages.

I agree it has gotten warmer over the last 150 years, because it was then the end of the little ice age happened. The real question is: are we in a regular temperature swing o More..

Funny enough, that article from 8 months ago that you linked lists the Met Office as providing reliable data. Here we have the Met Office itself saying that there has been no warming for 16 years.

And the problem of cherry-picking data cuts both ways. We've had 16 years of stable temperatures. Prior to that, we had 16 years of slight warming. Prior to that, we had 40 years of stable temperatures or slight cooling.

Even with the measure since reliable records started being More..

What about them? Like the fact that the Arctic this year had some strong, cyclonic wind patterns that broke up a lot of ice, or that ice has actually been increasing in the Antarctic?

This report simply looks at temperatures all over the world, poles included. I'm not sure why you're asking about the poles in particular, but it's been the case recently that weather in the poles has gone mixed directions.

  • The graph shows "tenths of a degree above and below 14c world average." It clearly shows that the global temperatures are above the 0 degree difference threshold each year.

More importantly, the starting and endpoints on such a short-term data set are important. If you calculate from Summer of '98 to Summer of '12, it would appear that the earth is cooling. If you start from '99, it clearly shows an upward trend.

This data set proves nothing, one way or the other. It's too sh More..
