I'm sorry I missed the part about it being "Banned"
Banned by who? Banned from what & Why?

@Peckerhead Banned by the brass, the main reason these things were banned is because they could contain intelligence helpful to the enemy even if the person realised they were writing it or not. Also of course because of the propaganda side of things, if someone's diary got home and told of the utter waste of life in the trench's public support for the war would drop and getting further soldiers to enlist would have become much harder.

@Globalgenocide The story clearly reads that "Australian Diggers" were banned (barred would be a better word) from keeping diaries but says nothing about the actual diary being banned at all.
There is a very distinct difference.

@Peckerhead I pretty sure most soldiers were banned from keeping a diary...if u are ever captured u could give away a fair amount of information like troop numbers and movements

Too bad he died, good to know that his memories will live on though.
Brutal was that trench warfare.

Diggers couldn't keep diaries? I dunno about that. The Australian War Memorial archive near Canberra claims they've got a big collection of them.

@dr tipple that was the legitimate reason that they used to go to war, you don't really think this murder could trigger things if they weren't eager to make war in the first place.
