(September 1st, 2012) Opposition fighters in Syria said early Saturday that they had captured an air defense base in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour, taking at least 16 soldiers captive and seizing weapons and ammunition in what appeared to be part of a broader rebel offensive against Syrian military installations in several parts of the country.
Rebel fighters in the province also attacked a military air base, according to activist groups, the third attack on an air force site in the past few days. Last week, rebel commanders claimed to have destroyed several helicopters during attacks on two separate military airports in
the northern Idlib Province.

It is so hard to know who is winning this war. Assad and his military are better trained and organized. They have better equipment. But, the FSA and a half dozen other groups seem to be taking the initiative from the videos that I have seen. This war will be going on a year from now if there is no external intervention.

with all those unprotected helis on the field, one would just have needed a handful of trained mortar crews to wipe them out.
good strategy btw to attack the airforce while grounded. worked for the FMLN guerillas in the 80´s
FMLN attacked the Ilopango Air Force Base with sappers, destroying six of the Air Force's 14 UH-1Hhelicopters, five Ouragan aircraft and three C-47s.
