An elderly convicted sex offender who became a YouTube sensation by posting zany videos of himself singing, died this week in prison.
Edward Muscare, 79, was best known as "edarem" to his nearly 22,000 YouTube subscribers for his videos lip-syncing with wild gray hair and missing teeth to songs like Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" or "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth."
In 2010 he was sentenced in Lake County, Fla., by Circuit Judge Mark Hill to five years in prison for posting the videos, which violated his probation. Sex offenders typically cannot have a computer or Internet access.
Muscare's original crime happened more than two decades ago when he pleaded no contest in Orange County, Fla., to a 1987 sexual battery of a boy. He served a prison term and was placed on a 10-year probation, but the term was extended twice because of subsequent violations. In 1998 he failed to comply with sex-offender-registration requirements when he lived in Lady Lake, Fla., and later moved to South Carolina without notifying authorities.
During his sentencing hearing two years ago, he begged the judge for mercy, saying that his videos didn't do any harm.
"My videos make people laugh," he said.
Muscare's YouTube channel has more than 7 million views and legions of fervent followers. His views continued to grow despite his incarceration.
"I think all I need to do is watch one of your videos every day, and I will forever be happy," a viewer named Shlufi wrote.
Since he's been behind bars, a woman named Marion who describes herself as "Ed's other half" continued to post updates on Muscare's situation and happenings. Muscare was last jailed in an inmate medical facility, according to the state Department of Corrections website. He died Sunday.
Marion's most recent YouTube videos suggested he was very ill in the last two weeks although it is unclear of his exact cause of death.
"Ed's at home now," Marion said in a video upload Monday. "He's with the angels."
