Mayor of city on Texas-Mexico border state slain as drug cartel violence soars

The mayor of Hidalgo, a city in the Texas-Mexico border state of Tamaulipas was killed on August 29, 2010 according to officials.

Mayor Marco Antonio Leal Garcia, who was driving with his 10-year-old daughter about 4:30 p.m., was killed and his daughter injured.

"This cowardly crime and reprehensible violent acts which occurred recently in this state reinforce our commitment to use all the resources of the Mexican state to continue fighting criminal gangs seeking to intimidate the families Tamaulipas," the Mexican President Filipe Calderon said in a statement.

"It was not just attack against a person,” Tamaulipas Governor Eugenio Hernandez Flores said in a statement. “It was an attack against institutions."

On Tuesday, the bodies of 72 migrants were found in Tamaulipas, a state experience extreme violence from Mexico's drug war.

Just two weeks ago a mayor of a nearby town was killed. Officials believe local police, involved with a drug gang, could have murder that mayor.

Most people think it was these act are from the Zetas drug cartel, but officials are not commenting officially as an investigations continue.

Over 28,000 people have died in drug violence since 2006.
