BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. -- A 62-year-old paraeducator has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a 17-year-old mentally disabled student.
The investigation began last week after another student reported seeing 62-year-old Steven Buittenveld fondle the girl, first in the hot tub at the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center, then in the swimming pool during a class trip.
Police said they reviewed the center's surveillance video, which confirmed the student's allegations.
Police arrested Buittenveld at his home on Friday after he refused to speak to investigators and tried to run.
He was booked into the Kitsap County Jail for investigation of indecent liberties and is being held on $500,000 bail.
Investigators say Buittenveld and his wife also provided unlicensed daycare for several mentally-challenged women, and the suspect has worked with a number of handicapped and challenged women over the years. Detectives are now looking into the possibility of similar incidents involving Buittenveld.
"Absolutely. We are conducting an ongoing investigation as we speak now," said Lt. Susan Shultz.
Buittenveld has been placed on leave from the Bainbridge Island School District. His family members chose not to comment on the allegations.
