Duh. Always break a problem down by the easiest number. In this case, 10. 10 is 60, 10 by 2 is 20, or 120 beers. So 19 would only be 6 less for 114. There, you've eliminated the possible answers by 50% in about 3 seconds of figuring.
17 is three less than 20, or 18 less than 120 for 102. 15 is 12 less for 90, thus you wouldn't have enough for 99, so 17.
And this is why my teachers hated me.

just take out 10/20/30 and multiply, then multiply the remainder, then add together.
15 x 6 = (10 x 6) + (5 x 6)
17 x 6 = (10 x 6) + (7 x 6)
etc

@KutKorners I'd never write it out, that's what bothered them. The way to write it out was never how I do it in my head because their way was usually slower. Hell, according to them, your way was also wrong. They wanted you to do the whole problem without breaking it up.

@rpgmw3 We didn't have computers when I went to school until well into middle school and those didn't even have hard drives. You still have to learn it in case you're out in the field and you forgot your calculator or something.
