Man...
When I was in high school, me and a few friends thought it would be cool to poor some mercury in our hands to play with it. It was years later that I learned about the dangers of mercury. EEeeek!

Yeah I had a friend in high school who showed me some mercury he had been playing with by hand. When I told him it was toxic his jaw dropped.
This isn't mercury though. It's microscopic pieces of plastic coated iron suspended in oil.

The spikes you see are the centers of the magnetic field lines trying to arc out to the other pole of the magnet. This is the fluid used in some of the space shuttles hydraulics.
