A MAN was forced to pay £565 after he was caught lobbing a balled-up chip bag
at a pal.


Dale Lidster, 23, was arrested after being caught on CCTV hurling the paper
bag.


The car valet denied the offence, saying the paper was put in the bin
afterwards.


But he was found guilty by Skegness magistrates.


He was fined £300, ordered to pay £250 in costs and a £15 victim surcharge.


Speaking after the case, Lidster, from Horncastle, Lincs, claimed the fine was
excessive.


He said: “I can’t believe what has happened. Almost £600, it must be the most
expensive bag of chips in the country.


“It’s not funny, not when you have to find £600 and when you haven’t done
anything wrong in the first place.


“I am going to appeal. I’d never condone littering but even if I had dropped
the chip wrapper and left it, the fine is ridiculous — and very
excessive.


“The whole thing is ridiculous. The annoying thing is you can go into the town
centre any night of the week and there’s always litter around.


“Okay, I did throw the wrapper but it was picked up straight away.”


East Lindsay District Council defended prosecuting Lidster, saying the court
case highlighted its attempts to reduce littering.


A spokesman said: “Littering will not be tolerated in East Lindsey because we
know how important clean streets are to people.


“We use state of the art CCTV, information from the community and our officers
to catch those littering. This means anyone could be watching and reporting
litterers.”

    and demand that it be picked up immediately, and also call the cops every time he sees

    someone dropping something. Make them look inadequate for not catching these "criminals"

    I have noticed that a lot of councils are becoming extremely petty lately, probably

      If he hadn't tried to be smart and take this to court it would probably have been a £30 fine, not £600. I got a parking ticket the other day. I could have not paid it and instead gone to court/ refused to pay. Ultimately I would have ended up paying 10 or 20 times more than the original ticket.

      I assume that he fought it because the footage of him picking up the litter and binning it afterwards would have been used as evidence, he probably thought it would be a walk in the park, however as we all know, councils and particularly the police have a habit of mislaying/losing/erasing evidence which could get someone off the hook.
      I agree with you on the pay it sooner rather than later thing though, pay it and then just go and do some really bad stuff without getting caught i More..
