Cool, but throwing it into the water seems like an unnecessary step

SS-N-15 or RPK-2 Viyuga launched by the Russian Navy. I spent a lot of days launching UGM-109 Tomahawks one after another from the USS Miami SSN-755 in 2002-2004 as a Fire Control Technician. These things are designed to be launched from a submarine platform but have since been modified to allow ships to "torpedo" them to achieve the same launch characteristics. Each unit is launched into the water inside of a ballistic launch case called a capsule launch system (CLS) and is equipped w More..

@lindz The problem was because the filename and description had been changed. I searched for this occurrence based on title and description - there was no match. Besides, if it's 3 years old here it may as well be new - most folks probably have not seen it.

And the benefits of that are..... ?

@Yukon6400 -Smaller launch platform (launched from torpedo tubes) and no need to heat shield the surface of the ship. They are designed for submarine launch but have been modified to allow surface ships to deploy them as well.

@PyneOil Those two benefits seem rather insignificant when considering its a war ship packed with other weapon systems.

@blackrabbit66
Well, if you already have bunch of ships with torpedo tubes and missiles which can be fired from them, why not use it?

Why?
Costs 3x's more to develop a missile like that, that's why.

The point being? Shooting a missile into water for it to fly into the sky and blow up? hmm.

Why would you engineer that kind of thing? I hope I didn't understand the video.

I can only imagine its a prototype, it might be safer to throw into the sea first but the biggest benefit would be if it could travel say 20km under water before emerging, thereby being detected later and not giving away the position of the launch vessel.
