My old man was stationed at an airbase in India during WWII... he said every barracks had it's own pet mongoose, which was kept on a long tether at the doorway. When they had to use the latrine (outhouse) at night they would take the mongoose on it's tether and let it range ahead down the path to sweep for cobras.

Yeah, my dad hated snakes too.... scared to death of them because he fell into a nest of garter snakes when he was a little boy.
My memory is that we were watching a nature program similar to the clip shown here and that's what prompted him to tell me the story about his experiences in India.
Hadn't thought about it for many years myself until I saw this clip.

Pretty cool, i watched another program were the mongoose were bitten. He finished the snake first, and then became unconscious. After a couple of hours it woke up and ate his meal;D
