  • Cool

Lobsters do the same thing too.

What you saw was the crab soaks up a bunch of seawater, the pressure basically explodes the shell open, he crawls out, then releases the seawater and the new shell hardens fairly quickly.

This is also how they regrow a lot limb, claw, even their eyes if they lost one in a battle.

This is also the only time a female can copulate...for a very short time after crawling out of the shell.

What's even more weird is that, if there's no other food around, they w More..

  • That's some trippy shit. I didn't know, or possible that I had completely forgotten that crabs shed their skin/shell. Interseting. Thanks for sharing.

  • always something cool going on in nature.
I had no idea they did that.
But I did learn crustaceans go "crunch-squish" and mammalians: squish-crunch ... when stepped on.

  • So when it first slides out ... is that just meat?
Cuz it didn't look alien to me at all -- looked like all it needed is five minutes in a wok and a butter garlic glaze.

    • Basically yep.
With all that seawater in it though, it'd shrink up in the saute pan by about 80%....nothing to hold the moisture in, so it would all purge out.
Still a good couple bites left though

    • That's why soft shell crabs are usually breaded and deep fried...to keep the moisture in.

I'm curious if a spider crab is sweet like Snow or King crab...never eaten one.

    • The Japanese spider crab, Macrocheira kaempferi, is the largest living arthropod; fully grown it can reach a leg span of almost 4 m (13 ft), a body size of up to 37 cm (15 inches) and a weight of up to 20 kg (44 lb). The Japanese spider crab is caught using small trawling nets, and is often eaten salted and steamed and has a sweet flavor. The Japanese spider crab is also used for research and ornamental purposes. It has a gentle disposition but numbers of the crab have diminished over recent yea More..

    • Interesting...that's some big ass crab!

I recall reading about the discovery of commercially available King Crabs in the Aleutian Islands by the US Military in the late 40's/early 50's.

Close to shore, there were millions of them, many up to 5 feet across.

The sailors were saying how afraid they were of them if they fell in the water....funny thing is, if you fall in the water where King Crabs live, the crab is the least of your worries, since the water is so cold.

BTW, if you ever want to g More..

  • you know, if insects like roaches and beatles were bigger, we'd be eating them like crab and lobster

    • So true...lobster (Maine) is very closely related to cockroaches.
Back in the 1600-1700's, prisoners in New england were fed lobster 3 meals a day, 7 days a week, nobody else would eat them.

After many complaints, a judge finally ruled that prisoners could not be fed lobster more than 7 meaks per week.
Of course that guy who met the firing squad in Utah had lobster for his last meal
