NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - Late Monday night, deputies were called out to an assault at River's Edge Mobile Home Park in North Fort Myers. Zeke Smith has been stabbed... not with a knife, but a real estate sign. Several accounts of how it happened are floating around.

Smith told deputies he was arguing with two men when one stabbed him with the sign. Smith sustained a punctured left lung and was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.

But, Property Manager Shirley Phillips said it happened a little differently. "They just seen Zeke circling around, walking around," Phillips said. "Zeke was saying, well, I'm gonna own this place and I'm running this place. He was talking crazy and acting crazy, walking in circles."

Phillips said Smith told the men, he was in the mood to fight, and threw a rock at a house window. When the two men tried to get him to leave, Phillips said, things got physical.


She says it happened like this: The two men chased Smith out to the sidewalk. That's when one of the witnesses said Smith got angry, pulled the sign out of the ground, and started striking him the with the metal sign. She says, the man fell to the ground but was able to wrestle away the sign. That's when Smith charged toward him, running right into the sign sharp metal stake.

"The whole incident was more of an accident or some sort of unusual occurrence," Phillips said.

No matter how it went down, residents are shaken up. "It's a pretty tight-knit community," resident James Clement said. "It's just crazy, one thing after another. Kind of worries me."

Smith is recovering, but as far as his living arrangement, "I think Zeke has pretty much played out his stay with us this trip," Phillips said.

Some witnesses say they saw one of the men throw the sign at Smith. Smith told investigators he does wish to press charges. So far, no arrests have been made in this case.
