Bystanders at Goldstream Boathouse Marina watched in horror Wednesday as a German shepherd locked in a police vehicle, parked in full sun for three hours, barked and yelped as the temperature rose.
"The dog was making a lot of fuss. You could hear him above the grinders and everything, so I called 911," said marina owner Lida Seymonsbergen.
It was while Seymonsbergen was on the phone that she peered in and realized it was a police vehicle — something confirmed when the dispatcher ran the licence.
After 30 minutes, when there had been no response, Seymonsbergen, called West Shore RCMP begging for help.
"I said 'I have a dying dog,' and I asked if I could get into the car, but the girl said 'the dog will kill you,' " said Seymonsbergen.
When RCMP arrived, Seymonsbergen and onlookers were told the dog handler had been contacted and said he had done everything possible — the windows were open three inches and there was a bucket in the car. "I was not impressed," Seymonsbergen said.
"A lot of the customers were very upset."
While waiting for help, the group dragged a tarp over the car and started spraying it with cold water.
"I told them to try and hit the bucket [inside]. I didn't care whether they hurt the car," Seymonsbergen said.
Police said they did not have keys to open the vehicle and, eventually, someone came down the driveway, jumped in the vehicle and drove away with the dog, she said.
The police officer who parked the vehicle just after noon left on a boat with a woman and children, Seymonsbergen said.
"I am really concerned about the dog and really upset.
"What handler leaves his dog in the car while he goes out in a boat?"
Const. Chris Dovell of West Shore RCMP said he was aware of the incident, but no information was available.
"Obviously we want to have the facts and the truth of whatever happened," he said.
The marina is located on Saanich Inlet, off the Trans Canada Highway just north of Goldstream Park.
