  • I got to the point of discussion about Socrates before my steam-valve blew.

The Barmy Bishop and Muddles Muggeridge obviously have zero idea about Socrates.

Socrates' entire life was based on asking awkward questions. The life of Brian is a classic Socratic ploy.

How can 'respected religious leaders' be so ignorant as to claim that this is equivalent to an attack on Socrates ?

I realise this is ages old, but FFS. The establishment guys rely only on some claimed tradition but actually have n More..

    • @DEADBEEF Yep, Socrates was a great football player,
he is considered one of the inventors of the moral and political philosophy.
      R.I.P (dec 2011).

But more seriously, when you have as a disciple Plato that says it all ...
Reunite the art and science and "Know thyself" are immortal and universal.

I'm waiting for someone to show the Muslims how Socrates would address Islam nowadays.

    • @DEADBEEF That is a really good point that I didn't even think of when listening to him talk about Socrates. I think Socrates would absolutely love Monty Python and their use of satire.

  • Oh my, you mean to tell me I actually agree with gregsto on something? The Life Of Brian is one of my all time favorite movies!!!!

    • @dirtbiker201 I have never been able to reconcile your avatar with the fact that I disagree with just about everything you say. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of my all time favorite films, with the scene immediately before your avatar's (the filthy peasant) being my favorite.

      Moistened bink indeed.

    • @gregsto This is my second time saying this as the first time my comment disintegrated when I sent it off. Didn't think we'd ever be on the same page, but damn good upload! (Sincerely)
(we may now exit Bizarro World and resume any and all snarky comments as it should be...

  • I just can't believe that anyone is stupid enough to pick up Alice In Wonderland, and totally believe it as reality and then base their lives around it. Are people really that gullible?

  • Interesting debate in its entirety.

Just goes to show you, no matter how high a human's level of intellect can be, they still put faith in a book loosely written over 2000 years ago.

Man can be intelligent.. and stupid.. all at the same time.

  • christians are low hanging fruit. we are under orders to love our enemies. our leader forgave the men who put Him to death,

    wanna be a real hero?

make a satirical comedy about Mohammed.

    • @Yogsoggoth

I don't think that satirizing Mohammed makes anyone a hero any more than this film makes Cleese and the rest of Monte Python heroes. Still, Muggeridge is absolutely correct in pointing out, even in the late 1970s or early 1980s that a similar film to Life of Brian satirizing Mohammed would raise all kinds of hackles that this film would not. What's even more remarkable is that Muggeridge is speaking here before Muslims were a significant population in Britain.

      Comics and satiris More..

    • @Yogsoggoth Their audience was the west. That is where the fim would be most viewed and make money. In the 1970's people in the west did not know shit about Islam. Any movie satirizing it would be a box office flop. It would have been a ridiculously stupid choice I think.

    • @JibberJabber

just because i find loving my enemies the absolutely most challanging aspect of my christian walk, doesn't mean i don't realize the absolute wisdom of it, nor that i secretly yearn to obliterate others, i simply wish people would pull their heads out of their spiritual asses, and get a freaking sense of discernment.

      fatwa ain't what i'm about.

  • I hate it when christians act like christianity is the basis of western civilization. As if the Greeks, Romans, Arabic mathematics (we use Arabic numerals after all...) etc. are not cornerstones of western civilization. Sure Christianity is an important piece of our history, I'm not saying it isn't. What I am saying is that Christianity is by no means the major influence of western civilization. It is just piece of what made us who we are today. And quite frankly I think it has held us back More..
