Gamera II - Human Powered Helicopter
The sixth flight of Gamera II, the second human powered helicopter from
the University of Maryland's Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center. Video
evidence suggests the helicopter, piloted by Colin Gore, flew for
approximately 40 seconds.

I must confess, I had higher expectations.

Amazing! But it seems to me that instead of four 2 bladed propellers wouldn't it be better to have one 8 bladed prop.? Lower weight, but of course lower stability - I know.
Of course the average sparrow can do much better than a 40 second flight time.
Would it be possible to harness-up 80 or 90 sparrows and re-attempt the flight?

Eventually humans will be genetically engineered to have hollow bones and skinnier legs - ideal for human-powered flight.

@Ratiocinator My ex-girlfriend had a hollow head and skinny legs - is that helpful?

It's a baby step towards human-powered space flight.

Tell these people to look up "Ground effect" on Wikipedia.

Nothing inefficient about that at all. It's ninety feet wide, takes five people to launch and you have to peddle 30 MPH to get it one foot off the ground for 18 seconds. It should have an Obama sticker on it.

This just goes to show it's entirely possible in some years to see people pedaling around the sky. Anything is possible given enough time resources and experimentation. This flight wasn't possible ten years ago.

Waste. Look how much effort expended to stay aloft for a few seconds. This is a pipe dream, humans simply can't put out enough power over extended period for self-powered copter. Stop funding this shit.

As I recall, the Wright brothers started about the same way. It's a start. A small start, true, but a start.
