Sep 22, 2007 CENTRALIA, Wash. - A family here claims energy drinks made a 29-year-old man hallucinate and may have led to his death.
In early August, Rey Lopez Saldivar was found fully clothed in a bathtub at his home, his hands behind his back. He was dead, but police believe it was a suicide.
His family said he worked as many hours as he could as a dishwasher and drank enormous amounts of energy drinks to stay awake - something they believe caused him to hallucinate.
Three days before he was found dead, Saldivar was in an accident on Interstate 5 and jumped into a passing pickup. Later at the hospital he was seen talking to a mirror that the devil was chasing him or talking to him.
The family said the man seldom slept and drank energy drink after energy drink.
Those who sell the drinks say they don't cause hallucinations.
