SALEM, OR -- The state Senate approved a bill Tuesday that would allow illegal immigrants actively working toward U.S. citizenship to pay in-state tuition rates at Oregon universities. The 18-11 vote means the measure now goes to the House, where a bipartisan group of lawmakers say they will support it.

"Tuition Equity is about continuing our state's commitment to its students," said Senate Majority Leader Diane Rosenbaum following Tuesday's vote. "he students who will benefit from Senate Bill 742 have attended a U.S. school for at least five years, graduated from an Oregon high school, and are on the path to citizenship. By allowing a student to stay in Oregon and attend college, we're keeping some of our best and our brightest in the state. This is the right thing to do.

Opponents of the legislation say illegal immigrants should not get a benefit that isn't available to American citizens who live in other states. If SB 742 becomes law, it is expected to affect about 100 students over the next seven years.

    If a male or female student that lives in Mill Plain Washington, who is a legal resident, with a family that pays taxes, decides to go to school in Oregon (just 19 miles away) they must pay the more expensive "out of state" tuition rates.

    BUT

    An ILLEGAL ALIEN, who doesn't pay taxes, living in California, decides to go to school in Oregon he/she is given the discounted "in state" tuition rate!

    Yeah that makes so much sense and is "fair"!

      I don't support the bill. I am just stating facts. The business community supports it because it perpetuates the cycle of high quality cheap labor afforded to them through our lax enforcement of illegal employment.

      It will only affect about 100 people over the next few years. It won't cost the state anything.
