Opening statements in explosives trial, Goose Creek Case
TAMPA - A federal prosecutor in Tampa says the items found in an Egyptian college student's car could be combined to make a destructive "incendiary bomb."
In a case with terrorist overtones, prosecutor Jay Hoffer told a jury Wednesday that 23-year-old Youssef Samir Megahed is guilty of transporting explosives and possessing a destructive device.
But an attorney for the former University of South Florida student said those items -- PVC pipe containing a mixture of sugar, potassium nitrate and cat litter, plus fuses -- were the makings of model rockets, and his client didn't even know his companion had put them in the trunk.
Megahed and another Egyptian student were arrested in South Carolina in August 2007 after a traffic stop.
