Last year we had this in our part of city. I guess over thousand cars were hit, most ended with broken windows (including mine) and all with destroyed whole body. I can still recognize many cars today that suffered in that event (my car looks like it was standing few days in front of golf teeing).
But being inside must be some kind of new experience.

If they had kept driving, at roughly what speed would they have to drive to get hit by the minimum number of hailstones, as opposed to standing still like this?
Please show your working.

@ommadawn I always wonder these things also, I can imagine if they were moving the possibility of death (hail to the head through window)or crashing would be higher than being stationary....?

@ommadawn It doesn't matter . Like the vehicles still driving through were more concerned about getting home to their family . It wouldn't stop me and the last of my concerns would be my vehicle .

@ommadawn THe answer is zero. The hailstones fall vertically.... they move horizontally. So they did the best...and got unlucky.

In my experience pulling over on the side of the highway during a storm is a recipe for disaster but with hail that size I really can't be sure.

@MAKMAK If you were driving that hail would smash through your windshield like it was a wet tissue.

Gives you an extra option - get the fuck out of the car.
They are maintaining some kinda control and adding options.
Is that a bad decision?

IDK with baseball-sized ice balls falling out of the sky I'd rather stay in my vehicle and keep moving, even if slow. The thought of a vehicle behind me traveling at highway speed driving into me would make me reluctant to stop.

If you don't know which way the storm is going, it's best to stop so it can pass you.

I was thinking get out the car and put the spare tire over your head.
Stand well away from your car, and between the oncoming traffic and your car (ie not next to, or downstream incase your car gets hit and still goes into you).
Hold the camera with your spare hand.
The right way up.

I've personally witnessed golf ball size hail and smaller but NOTHING like this. WOW, that would kill someone if hit in the head. what were those people behind him thinking running away from their car. They are asking for it. When golf ball size hail hit my patio deck it sounded like missiles exploding with a really high pitch twang of death.

@iwillnottell ... One of the many deaths from the tornado and hailstorm was caused by an old guy getting hit in the head by one of those gigantic hailstones....

@boredin2008
i live near st louis, we had that same storm system go right over our heads, only it was quarter sized hail when it hit here, that stuff did hurt when it hit me in the head- kinda like someone shooting ice cubes at your head with a slingshot. small price to pay as i got my truck in the garage before it really started coming down- thw hole driveway was covered like it had just snowed.

@justadudeinmo Ouchie! Then i know i defininetly wouldn't want to get caught in the open with baseball sized hail coming down (or those quarter sized ones either). Last week or so, we had some hail for matter of seconds and it was pea-sized but even those sting if straight on your head.
