Crack-Smoking Suspect Tasered and arrested After High Speed Police Chase

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A Georgia man was in custody Friday in West Melbourne after a police chase that reached speeds of more than 110 miles an hour.

The man was wanted for two armed robberies in the last 24 hours and mugging a woman earlier this week.

Palm Bay police officers told that the suspect was actually smoking crack as the chase was going on.

According to West Melbourne police, Kelly Shane Boyd was armed with a knife or razor when he demanded cash at a Wendy's restaurant on West New Haven Avenue early Thursday evening.

Investigators said Boyd was also armed with a handgun.

Boyd was able to flee from the Wendy's with a small amount of cash, but witnesses spotted the vehicle, a Mitsubishi Eclipse, and the Georgia tag that was registered to Boyd.

Investigators said Boyd was also a suspect in an armed robbery at the Walgreens on Minton Road in Palm Bay on Friday morning, where he showed a knife.

Police spotted the Eclipse on westbound US-192 Friday morning and a West Melbourne officer began following it with speeds at times in excess of 100mph.

Deputies with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office were able to flatten at least one of the suspect's front tires using stop sticks.

Boyd eventually stopped on I-95 and, authorities said, held a blade up to his own throat.

They smashed the windows and tasered him three times.

Investigators said he was smoking crack even as they were trying to get him out of the car. His pipe was placed into evidence.

"When these people like him get desperate, they'll do most anything.

We considered him very dangerous," said Cmdr. Steve Wilkinson, West Melbourne Police Department.

Late Friday morning investigators said Boyd is also the suspect in a strong arm robbery attempt at the Regions Bank in West Melbourne on July 29 shortly before 11:00pm.

Investigators said he approached a woman making a withdrawal from the bank's ATM.

The woman sped away before Boyd could reach her and she was able to retrieve her ATM card, but the cash and receipt were left behind.

Boyd denied getting the cash, but admitted to police to attempting the robbery.
