@landsolo It was maybe a mortar air burst but I do not see why they would use anything less than a 120mm shell. I have no clue but the FO's calculations were died on.

Mortars ain't the easiest weapon to bring on target.
Usually it takes estimating one round long and getting a report back as to how long. Then you lob one short and get the info from those close who can observe the impact where that one went.
Now you have the target "bracketed", you can easily deduce the correct range to be right on target and then you let 'em have it with multiple rounds.
This time there were no bracketing rounds, just wham bam slam see ya!
