Swan Point Cemetery - Providence, RI
Part of channel(s): Yoursay (promoted), Liveleakers (promoted)

For those of you who don't know me, which is all of you, I love cemeteries. Always have, ever since I was a small child. Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, RI is one of my favorites, not just because of it's size.

It was established in 1846 and can be found in the National Register of Historic places, growing from 60 acres to over 200, with near 40,000 burials. The stonework and statuary is amazing and remarkably well kept. You can find everything from monoliths to mausoleums.

Several notable burials within the cemetery are H.P. Lovecraft (Author and Poet), Richard Arnold (Union Army General), George Henry Corliss (Inventor of the Corliss Steam Engine), Benjamin Ham Child (Medal of Honor recipient of the Civil War), and Theodore Francis Green (US Senator and 57th Governor of Rhode Island). The T.F. Green airport is also named in his honor.

When you stand on the grounds you can feel the tranquility as well as the weight of history.

I do apologize for the solar panels reflection visible throughout, it didn't even cross my mind until reviewing the footage. I'll remove it next time! XD

Enjoy LiveLeak! Maybe next time you're in New England you'll take a journey to Swan Point and see it for yourself.

  • I really like scrap yards, which is kinda similar i guess..I always look at the old cars and wonder where they have been, holiday trips, the conversations held, the arguements, the laughs etc etc...horses for courses.

  • I like going through cemeteries except for the catholic section, even in death it's a competition for who has the most money to afford a giant grave.

  • I also like visiting cemetries and other types of places such as old hospitals, schools and just absorbing that feeling of history and past events. Maybe strange but it works.

  • Nice. I'm a bit of a cemetery connoisseur myself, though I prefer the abandoned and overgrown ones.

    • @Hollow_eyes A few years back I travelled to many of the historic cemeteries in Kent County, RI. A lot of them were in rough shape, missing stones, some in the middle of a plot of private property with no maintenance. One of them had a housing developer pave right over it. There's some really great ones in New England though!

  • I've always wondered how a cemetery can last in the long run. Once it's full, it's full, so there's no more income. They may be tax exempt but someone still has to pay for upkeep, forever.

    • @doood Older cemeteries usually rely on assistance for sustainment. Modern cemeteries have burial contracts that specify the stone will remain for a certain length of time, after that the stone gets removed and someone new gets interred. There's been a few cases where the stone was removed during the living memory of a family and it caused a shit storm.

  • I was camping earlier this summer and found a cemetery in Perkinsville, VT that was established by a revolutionary war general along what was then a military road.

The plaque says: "The Grout Cemetery Laid out by Major Hilkiah Grout, indian fighter, pioneer and statesman, whos wife, Submit, and three children were captured by the indians and for three years held hostage in Canada. This ancient burial ground was moved to this place in 1959 from it's original location in the valley of th More..

    • @11k29 That sounds like an incredible place!

    • @onionswithnos Indeed. There is another cemetery in Concord, VT that my father and I used to hunt near. There was a stone there for a woman that was captured by indians, had three kids with them, and was returned to her people at age 24. Last time I saw the stone was 25 years ago. My father and I went back there 5 years ago while visiting family in the area, but the stone was gone. Likely someone took fancy with it and stole it.

  • Nice, I take my dog out over by the water (and nearby trails) in this cemetery a couple times a week. The layout and maintenance of this place is remarkable. Sure beats the "trail" outside of the entrance full of joggers IMO. :)

Neighborhood in this area is nice too, until you get to Pawtucket! lol

    • @MDMAchine Ugh, after stopping at Swan Point I made the mistake of heading north to Pawtucket, instead of booking it back to Branch Ave. as fast as possible. Tranquility lost, back to Road Rage mode.
