The pilot is forced to make a dramatic outlanding in a Schweizer 1-26 sailplane, heres what he said about the situation:
"The aircraft is a sailplane (glider) and has no engine. While you can keep them aloft for hours and go up tens-of-thousands of feet, you have to read nature correctly and find rising air. Kind of like a surboard has no engine, but if you read the wave, you can speed along. I did not read the waves well that day."
"I was making a landing approach to the empty field, and the road became a necessity when I saw the signs and cable vaults in/ near the field. I had been in sink some ten minutes prior to the landing and got stuck with a ridge between me and the valley. The landing spot was chosen about 4 minutes prior."

The pilot said all that huh?
During a solo instructional glider flight, the student pilot released from the tow airplane at a planned altitude of 4,250 feet mean sea level. Upon the release, the student pilot was not able to locate any up-currents, and the sink rates the glider encountered varied between 200 to 600 feet per minute. The pilot stated that there was insufficient lift to clear the ridge safely and glide back to the airport, so he selected two open fields for a possible off-field la More..

@Pud_Z -I really don't like that expression. Any landing you can walk away from is indeed a landing, but this one was an example of how not to do it. This guy made some really poor decisions here.

@PyneOil Since you have all the information. What happened? Do other sail plane pilots never get caught in bad air conditions?... He clearly checked that road before he committed to it.

@ST0N3PONY -First thing, he blew the final by a huge degree. Second, he selected and area with other people and a road that was far too narrow for an aircraft with thin, high aspect ratio wings like a glider. A smart glider pilot will leave plenty of room for failure (thermal lift failure) before they are required to land off field, much less in a populated area or a public road. Checked the road? Do you think he has some kind of publication that describes all roads including their widths and le More..

@PyneOil Yeah... I don't pretend to be a pilot. You're obviously very emotional about this.
Looked like a skilled landing to me. The road was completely empty and it looked to me like he saw that before he committed to it. I suspect even experienced pilots like you can get caught in bad situations. I wasn't there, I won't pretend to know that he only flies on weekends. I'm not psychic.

Just a piss-poor pilot making this kind of mistake and that atrocious landing. I hate weekend warriors that don't know what they are doing. They put theirs lives and those around them in extreme danger with their carelessness. I hope this guy get is "ticket" punched for this stunt.
