Shocker. Democrats Defend Socialism Outside Obama Rally
Americans for Prosperity was interviewing Obama supporters outside his Virginia rally on Friday night.
They said, “Socialism was cool.”
President Obama visited Charlottesville on Friday October 29, 2010 to campaign for liberal Congressman Tom Perriello. We decided to hand out our free “Socialism isn’t Cool” bumper stickers to the crowd. What we found about Perriello and Obama supporters was shocking.

Our country is chock full of clueless people. Ask anyone who fled Eastern Europe to come to the US decades ago: too many Americans don't recognize the signs of totalitarianism and economic failure.

Ask anyone who fled to America from England, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Mexico and so on. Arrive at a conclusion that capitalism is Bad Thing (tm). Same logic. :)
It's just not as simple as that. Not only there is a long distance between a welfare state and Marxism-Leninism, the two are not even pointed in the same general direction all that much.

No, not the same logic...at all. People come to the US for different reasons. My point is that people who have lived under authoritarian systems and centrally planned economies have learned from their experience and recognize the symptoms of that disease when they see it.
Second, I really don't care about matters of degree, whether we have a soft tyranny or a hard one.

That's the point. You are confounding "authoritarian system hell-bent on eradicating private ownership of capital" and "socialism". Meantime history knows examples of both strictly authoritarian capitalism (Germany and Italy in the 1930s, big chunks of South America etc) and non-authoritarian socialism (Scandinavia these days). These things are not even on the same axis.

Another thought for you: the vast majority of people who came to US from Eastern Europe came for the exact same reasons that most Irish, Italians, Danes and Englishmen did earlier in the XX century. A simple promise of calmer and more prosperous life in a better organized society. Nothing to do with politics and all that jazz.

No, not really...it's just a matter of degree. Government is a necessary evil...taxes required to fund that government are a necessary evil.
What you may not understand is that this country was founded on the idea that the state was to be limited, and there to serve the interests of the people. Not the other way around.
Eliminating private property is on More..

After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they a More..

She's a free-loader. Socialism is needed to an extent, such as Social Security, welfare, FAA, FDA, FBI, Public Schools, Government funded parks and social centers, roads and highways, prisons, and many more things like that.
We all need a little of that. We need democracy in a republic.
Damn, it would be nice if the politicians would run the government with common sense and a desire to maintain it rather than a free meal ticket for themselves and a job they just show up for.

You ever notice how athiest and liberals love to say that Jesus was a socialist, cute slogan, "yeah that'll shut em up". Jesus was an individualist. That's why the Socialist states try to tear down religion so much. Collective lemmings don't want the minds of the proletariat to think about individuality, to do so for them is a sin. And they say they aren't religious, hilarious.
I also find it amusing how they'll argue Jesus as a man is a myth. They don't know there is ac More..
