There Are too Many Bureaucrats and They Are Paid too Much

America has too many bureaucrats and they are dramatically overpaid. This mini-documentary uses government data to show how federal, state, and local governments are in fiscal trouble in part because of excessive pay for a bloated civil service.

    • Anyone who thinks that Civil/Government workers get paid too much, has never been one.

Compared to private sector, you make far less.

    • That's the worst argument I have ever heard. You don't have to be a government employee to look at the data available and reach the conclusion that civil employees on average make far more as compared to those in the private sector.

I could make the ludicrous statement that; "anyone who thinks CEO's make too much money has never been a CEO." or "Anyone who thinks doctors make too much money has never been a doctor". One doesn't need to be a CEO or a doctor to know they ma More..

    • Big difference between being a contractor, and being a government employeer.

If this asshole thinks government workers are paid "way too much", he's never been one. Most
are paid far less than they would make in the private sector.

He makes a big deal about 20% of government workers making over $100,000.

Well, how about the 80% who don't?

  • Well duh. When 20% of Americans are employed by the taxpayers, who only make up less than 50% of ALL AMERICANS, it doesn't take a statistician to figure out that the spending policy is destined for failure.

Yet Obama says he's creating millions more jobs. Oh boy!

  • Let's take an example at the Energy Deparment, what do they do? They don't produce energy. The House Development Deparment, they don't build houses... The CIA, they're supposed to find threats to National Security, but the failed in 9-11... And there are many more examples of goverment agencies gone awry and completely worthless.

  • I've worked for the federal government and made half what I would have made in the private sector. The idea that federal employees can "retire at 55" ia a fallacy. When you can retire, and how mcuh of a pension you get, depends on how many years of service you've put in. If you get a permanent Federal job (which is a major feat all in itself) at 25, then yes, you cold retire at 55 with a nice pension.

I now work for a County government, making about $60,000 per year. I could mak More..

  • The AVERAGE government worker has it much better off than the AVERAGE private sector worker.

If you really think you can make more in the private sector doing the same work, then why not quit your County government job, give the 60K back to your fellow citizens and take the private job?

    • I've worked for the government because those are the jobs I was interested. I worked for the National Park Service because you don't get to have that kind of experience in the private sector. It's the same reason I worked for a volcanologist with the USGS.

The County job was just a convenience at the time, especially since the kind of work I do is very specialized and there isn't much call for it in the private sector in Hawaii. Right now isn't the time to be quitting ANY job.

    • There's also the small detail that "the average private sector worker" includes absolutely everyone who doesn't work for a government office. Busboys, fast food workers, waitresses, parking lot attendants, store clerks, grocery store baggers....you name it. A whole array of no jobs that pay minimum wage, and require no skill.

There are very few such jobs in the government. Most of them, even the blue collar series require very specific skill sets that you must satisfy in order to More..

    • So, there isn't much call for the work you do in the private sector, but at the same time you say you could leave your 60K Government job for a 80K plus Private sector job.

Why did you feel it necessary to mention that you pay taxes? Everyone pays taxes.

"What would be more telling is the wages of skilled workers in the private sector (who are actually working in their field), vs. skilled workers in government jobs."

No, I said there isn't much work for me in the Private Sector IN HAWAII. It's a specialized field.

If I went to the mainland, there would be much more work for me in the private sector. Or, there would have been a year or two ago.

    • "This video speaks in generalities, and doesn't reflect the experience of the average government employee"

Oh, so now it's that the average government employee is more experienced than the juvenile undeveloped minds in the private sector. Government employees deserve more because they are wiser than those in the private sector, is that it?

You are a County Employee, so this video and the information put forth was not intended as criticism directly towards your position in any way More..

    • Let's say you are the CEO of a company.

As the head of this company you can choose to either hire domestic workers from pool A, or foreign workers from pool B. So, you have two pools of people from which you can choose to do your hiring from.

The Federal Government then comes to you and says; Hey, if you hire workers from pool B we will give you a tax discount for each one of those workers you hire. Great, what about workers from pool A you ask. No, no tax credit for those workers, just w More..

    • Of course they are. What would you expect? We have allowed the federal government to expand so far beyond the limitations they are supposed to be bound to under our constitution it was almost a foregone conclusion that's what would happen.

Back before the government decided they had the authority to control all aspects of our economy, businesses actually failed, while others profited. The ones which failed did so because they did not provide what the consumer wanted. Those which succeeded wer More..
