Egyptian military official warns to cut off the hands of Israel over Sinai

By JOANNA PARASZCZUK, HERB KEINON

"We'll cut off the hands of any aggressor," SCAF member threatens; Israel responds by reiterating commitment to the peace treaty.

The remarks came in the wake of Israeli calls for a military operation in Sinai after Friday's attack on the Sinai border that killed an IDF soldier and wounded another.

In response, an Israeli government official on Monday reiterated Prime Minister Netanyahu's desire to maintain strong relations with Egypt, saying Israel's approach to dealings with Cairo
has "always been very measured and cautious, because we are committed to the peace treaty."

A member of Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has warned that it would "cut off the hands" of any domestic or foreign aggressor in Sinai.

The official, who refused to be named, accused Israel of attempting to provoke Egypt,
and said his country's armed forces were dealing with the matter "wisely and quietly", the al-Masry al-Youm newspaper reported late Sunday night. The remarks came in the wake of Israeli calls for a military operation in Sinai after Friday's attack on the Sinai border that killed an IDF soldier and wounded another.

The official, who said Israel had threatened a military operation, noted that the Egyptian leadership is monitoring all of the recent developments on the border with Israel.

Egypt would not allow "a single inch" of Sinai to be harmed, the official added.

In response, an Israeli government official on Monday reiterated Prime Minister Netanyahu's desire to maintain strong relations with Egypt, saying Israel's approach to dealings with Cairo has "always been very measured and cautious, because we are committed to the peace treaty."

Alluding to the tension over Sinai, the Israeli official stated that at "this sensitive time" a "cautious and measured" approach is the most conducive to maintaining the peace."

Intelligence Agencies Minister Dan Meridor said that he was certain that keeping the agreement was in the objective interest of both Israel and Egypt, and a cornerstone of peace in the Middle East.

Hinting at the impact the abrogation of the treaty would have on Israel's ability to sign any other accords in the future, Meridor said Israel wanted "more agreements with more partners," and as such wanted to ensure that the agreements that were signed were kept so it would be possible to sign other accords.

Meridor said Egypt wanted and received sovereignty over Sinai, and "we believe they will do what is necessary to retain tranquility." He said it was clear that there were groups in Sinai who wanted to disrupt the peace, and that the Egyptians needed to do what it takes to stop them.

  • Israel is too small of a country. They need to invade egypt, lebanon, syria, and libya already and make them part of the jewish state. The world would be a much more peaceful place if israel was bigger and muslim coutries fewer.

    • @randir14 They should carpet bomb each country. If nothing else it would give israel a nice bufferzone.

(btw, i wasnt serious in my first, but if the world really wants peace the only option is to eliminate the hateful, warmongering cultish ideology of mohammed. Seriously, what kind of sick people think a child molester is a perfect human being? Once people are no longer brainwashed by that cult, The world will be a better more peaceful place.)

  • The many replies by Israelis (and Jews world wide) to such reports in the local media are "Why Israel gave back the Sinai if now this is the situation....??? Attacks over IDF soldiers and civilians and threats by Egyptian high officials...."

The Jihadists in Sinai could btw cuase a strategic damage to the relations of Israel and Egypt if they were only focusing their attacks on Israel border, but instead they attack Egyptian forces as well.

If they were smart enough they could have More..

  • The tittle is a bit disingenuous as the egyptian supreme council were saying they would cut of the hands of any foreign fighter or extremist who escalates the tensions with Israel. In Fact the Egyptian government is showing that they are serious about not getting into a war with Israel.

  • Interesting. Egypt doesnt want a repeat of the ass kicking they brought on themselves twice in the late 60's and early 70's. They are lucky that the border isnt along the Nile and that Israel appeased the UN by giving back that land after those wars. When Egypt fought in those wars it was one step forward, twenty steps back.

Appeased? lol They wanted to keep everything until the great powers forced Israel to withdraw. Had the Arab armies weren't so incompetent and didn't make the tactical mistakes we wouldn't be discussing Israel today ;)

Over the last couple of years (regardless who is at fault here) I`ve been watching the rhetoric from these guys get louder and louder and more sharper (Cut the hands off any aggressor for example)they keep pushing for this so called "Fight" or War with the Non believers, they just may get what they are wishing for but I dont think they`ll like the end result.

I have been keeping a bit of an eye on the subject and can steadily see the arrogance level of these guys going up, ones confidence doesnt go up without a reason, what do they "THINK" they have that we dont? - and what does the U.S ACTUALLY know what they do have?. I think answers to these questions will be answered sooner than later...

  • The peace agreement limits Egyptian patrols. Limited patrols leads to Islamist attcks on the Israeli border. Israel hits back against unsanctioned Islamist rebels in Sinai. Outrage erupts in Egypt.
    Start again from the top.

    • @beer foot

Yea, but the only mistake in your loop is that "Israel hits back"...

Israel doesn't hit back in Sinai, also after several deadly attacks by Jihadists over the past year.

Another mistake is that you forgot Israel agreed last year to change the agreements so Egypt could deploy much more military forces inside the Sinai.
