Off Duty EMT Helps Little Boy Runover By Parade Float.
ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- As the St. Augustine Christmas parade passed by where he was sitting, off duty EMT Tom Harding noticed one little boy on one of the floats.
"When he came by here I noticed his foot was dragging in front of the tire well and I said man that looks like an accident waiting to happen," says Harding.
And then the accident did happen.
Seven-year-old Jacob Johns dangling
More..his legs over the side of a parade float was caught in the tires and pulled under.
"I just started running and when I got there he was coming out from under the tire and I grabbed and stabilized his head and neck so nothing else would happen."
Two tires on the float trailer had run over Johns' abdomen.
Harding who is an EMT and a nurse that was in the crowd helped the boy until emergency crews arrived.
The entire parade was shut down and the parade crowd watched, stunned.
"It brought tears to my eyes when I saw him laying there and the first thing I thought about is my two daughters and my worries go out to the parents," says Barry Collins who was watching the parade.
The boy was conscious and talking at the scene.
A helicopter landed in a field next to the parade route and the boy was flown to Shands hospital in Jacksonville.
Tom Harding says he did not immediately see any broken bones but the boy most likely has serious internal injuries.
Johns was in fair condition Saturday night.
