PITTSBURGH The Auburn Towers, home to Pittsburgh seniors for almost 50 years in Larimer, were imploded Monday morning at 9:20.
Officials said about 500 pounds of explosives were used to bring down the high-rise building.
Residents were moved to other housing last fall. The towers were gutted and more than 900 holes were drilled in structural columns and stuffed with explosives.
"We use a very small quantity of explosives to modify the integrity of the supporting columns and just let gravity have its way.
It's going to win for a change," said Mark Loizeaux, of Controlled Demolition Inc.
