Ali Agca, the Turkish Muslim assassin who in 1981 shot and wounded Pope John Paul II wants to apply for a Polish citizenship. His attorney has relayed the message of intent to the Polish authorities.

Poland's foreign minister Sikorski was allegedly infuriated by the suggestion. Other officials describe Agca's chances of success as extremely low.

Agca is currently serving time in a Turkish prison. He will get out in 2010.
